Master of Science in Lighting

For those with a background in engineering, physics, or a related field.

This is a one-year program with guaranteed paid summer internship or research work before graduation.

This unique and specialized program in the field of lighting is a full time, Fall-Spring-Summer program in which students work closely with our faculty and lighting experts who serve as mentors. The program offers a hands-on study of lighting applications with a culminating master’s project experience in collaboration with our industry partners.

Lighting is a multidisciplinary topic cutting across many fields. In the M.S. program, students learn a broad array of topics such as light sources, electronics, lighting controls, optics, thermal and mechanics, sensors, metrology – measurement and quantification of lighting parameters, business and entrepreneurship through classes such as Lighting Technologies & Applications, Design, Human Factors, Physics of Light, Lighting Leadership, and in the execution of their final master's project. Students gain hands-on experience about the latest technologies and applications in our fully equipped laboratories. The degree is geared toward students with a background in architecture, interior design, engineering, physics, or related fields.

With a 100% placement, our graduates in lighting have gone on to industry careers in technology, architectural and lighting design, manufacturing, and government laboratories, industry societies and standards agencies, among others. Additionally, they have continued their education in Ph.D. programs and medical school.

Guaranteed Internship as part of the Lighting MS program

The LRC guarantees its masters students a full time, paid internship as part of the Lighting MS program. This will be taken during the following summer of the program. Students will present ideas to an audience of staff from various internship hosts who may make students an offer. The LRC may also offer students a summer internship which would be done at the LRC.
