Lighting Design
Lighting design is the creative and skillful shaping of illumination in spatial environments. Spatial and temporal rhythms of light and dark play a foundational role in visual perception and biological regulation. Lighting technologies enable us to harness the play of light and dark to support visual performance and aesthetics as well as health and well-being.
At the Lighting Research Center (LRC), we have extensive experience in human factors and practical design research for both indoor and outdoor settings. Our research includes studies in both controlled laboratory settings and real-world environments. Design concepts and implementations are grounded in scientific inquiry and tested to generate evidence and expertise that informs best practices, industry guidelines, and the development of emerging technologies.
Our design research examines and implements lighting that supports humans in their various activities both day and night while minimizing harm to wildlife and environment. Collaboration with various external partners and interdisciplinary teams is key, and we actively engage with industry professionals, municipalities, organizations, and academic institutions to ensure our work is both innovative and grounded in practice.
