Our Mission: To advance the effective use of light for society and the environment.

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was established in 1988 by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). For over 35 years, the LRC has continued to be at the forefront of advancing the science and application of lighting. Its pioneering research spans the assessment of emerging lighting technologies, the optimization of optical components, and the development of specialized lighting applications. Our multidisciplinary team of scientists and educators brings expertise in research, technology, design, and human factors, collaborating globally with manufacturers, government agencies and professional practice. In 1990, the LRC became the first university-based center to offer formal degrees in lighting; today, it continues to educate future leaders through its academic and professional programs.

Through the years, our commitment to advancing the science and application of lighting has remained unwavering. Over the decades, lighting has experienced a dramatic transformation—not only in technology but also in our understanding of its impact on people and environments. We remain deeply engaged with these shifts and continuously explore innovative ways to research, evaluate, and apply emerging solutions, aspiring to be the world’s foremost source of objective, timely insight into light and lighting.

We strive to lead the advancement of lighting technologies and practices through cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and education. This includes not only promoting and developing lighting wherein economic gains are balanced with environmental sustainability but also cultivating the next generation of lighting innovators. At the heart of our efforts is a commitment to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and dynamic environment that empowers faculty, staff, and students alike.
