Horticulture, UV Science, and Circadian Lighting Experts to Present at LRC Conference

Last week the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced the experts panel on the future of lighting and industry stewardship, as part of the LRC Partner-Alliance Event. The conference, which will be held September 5-6 in Troy, New York, will also feature several technical presentations, including:
 
“The Future of Horticultural Lighting”
  • Erik Runkle, Professor, Department of Horticulture, Michigan State University
As the world’s population soars, there are increasingly compelling reasons to produce high-value food crops in or near urban areas. From economic and horticultural perspectives, lighting is one of the most important components of controlled-environment horticulture, especially when plants are produced indoors in vertical farms. The light environment regulates crop yield and uniformity, as well as various quality attributes such as leaf size, color, texture, and taste. Lighting can also be used as a non-chemical method to control plant diseases or to increase the nutritional content of leafy crops. Dr. Runkle will provide an overview of the different horticultural lighting applications, then will discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the nascent vertical farming industry.
 
“An Update on the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Task Group”

This panel will provide an update on the task group working with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to develop a recommended practice for the specification, measurement, and application of lighting to support circadian entrainment of individuals in daytime work environments. The task group will produce a set of practical recommendations and methods, grounded in science, that can be broadly implemented by addressing how to specify lighting for daytime applications, how to accurately measure circadian light, and how specification can be achieved, not only through the use of ceiling fixtures, but also by windows, skylights, and luminous panels. “Opportunities in UV Lighting Science and Technology”

The ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum (UV) is often not considered part of general purpose lighting, yet has long been used in specialty applications such as sterilization, curing and catalysis. In this presentation, Dr. Majumdar will discuss the recent science and opportunities to expand the use of UV in health, agriculture, the food system, and more broadly. He will also discuss performance requirements for UV sources to meet the needs for these applications.
 
“Lighting Research Center Project Updates”
  • Mariana Figueiro, Director, Lighting Research Center
  • Nadarajah Narendran, Director of Research, Lighting Research Center
Drs. Figueiro and Narendran will present more than 30 major research projects conducted by the LRC over the past year in the areas of solid-state lighting, light and health, transportation and safety, plant pathology, and energy efficiency.
 
The LRC also recently announced that Paul Schoemaker will give the keynote at the event. Dr. Schoemaker will highlight lessons learned from the past as well as emphasize the importance of collective leadership for industry survival.

Glenn W. Bailey was a major force in lighting. Under his leadership, Genlyte became one of the two largest luminaire companies in North America with a company culture focused on productivity and openness. In 2010, the Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation provided an endowment to the LRC memorializing Glenn Bailey’s contribution to the lighting industry. The stated objective of the endowment is to provide support to the LRC to establish closer ties with lighting manufacturers with a strong presence in the United States.
