Lighting Research Center Hosts Outdoor Lighting Institute October 12-13, 2011

Outdoor lighting photoOutdoor lighting design and specification has grown much more complex over recent years with engineers and specifiers considering new technology options, control system advances, light pollution concerns, human vision and many other variables.  As a result, the LRC has developed the Outdoor Lighting Institute. This two-day, hands-on course is designed to provide the knowledge and tools necessary for developing outdoor lighting installations that substantially reduce energy use and light pollution while improving safety and security.

This practical course is geared toward engineers, lighting designers, municipal officials, and utility personnel who must design, specify, and commission energy-efficient outdoor lighting installations for sites including streets and roadways, parking areas, parks, and pedestrian areas.

“Municipal traffic engineers have often been the ones making decisions about outdoor lighting installations, but that trend is quickly changing due to advanced technology options and growing concerns about light pollution and energy savings,” explained Dan Frering, LRC education manager. “Outdoor lighting offers business growth and entrepreneurial opportunities for engineers and other professionals who wish to specialize in this segment of the market. Our new course offering will provide the knowledge and tools necessary to create efficient outdoor lighting designs that meet customer needs while also considering societal and environmental impacts.”

The Outdoor Lighting Institute is made possible through a grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). 

 “NYSERDA is pleased to support the Outdoor Lighting Institute to bring advanced technology training to municipal employees and others,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. “This program will prepare them to implement more efficient outdoor lighting systems that not only reduce energy consumption but also improve safety and security for community members.”

The course will be held at the LRC facilities in Troy, New York, and includes lectures and hands-on sessions, as well as field exercises where participants will evaluate several outdoor lighting installations in New York’s Capital District area. In addition, the course will include the latest information on light-emitting diode (LED) technology, metrics, and performance, provided by the Alliance for Solid-State Illumination Systems and Technologies (ASSIST).

Participants will earn two continuing education units (CEUs) for completing the Outdoor Lighting Institute and will receive a Continuing Education Certificate in outdoor lighting. Seating is limited, so early registration is encouraged. For complete information, please visit

About the Lighting Research Center
The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is the world's leading center for lighting research and education.
