The Lighting Energy Alliance (LEA) at Rensselaer’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) is a collaboration of members whose common goal is to conduct research to increase the benefits of lighting while reducing its environmental and monetary costs. Now that much of the early conservation measures have been implemented, LEA will work to identify effective new ways to save energy, quantify the savings, and support its members in implementation. LEA invites utilities, efficiency agencies, and ESCOs to join its efforts.
Members and Sponsors
Program of work
LEA’s activities are developed in cooperation with members. LEA can conduct many types of work including product testing, professional outreach and guidance, field demonstrations, online tools or applications, product development, lighting patterns, and other research and development.
Topics of interest to the alliance include:
- Emerging lighting technology
- Horticultural and agricultural lighting
- Commercial LED troffers and linear luminaires
- Pin-base LED lamps
- Luminaire-integrated controls
- Outdoor lighting controls
- Value metrics
Projects
Examples of LEA-sponsored projects include:
- Horticultural lighting. The LRC examined 13 horticultural luminaires, including LED,
HPS, and MH products. The report also provides a framework for testing and evaluating additional horticultural luminaires on an equal-PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density) basis.
- An investigation of pin-base LED lamps. Guidance is provided as a PDF document.
- Guidance for contractors and specifiers when replacing fluorescent troffers with new LED troffers or retrofit kits. Guidance is provided as both a PDF document and a webinar.
- An investigation of luminaire-integrated lighting controls, completed in conjunction with the Bonneville Power Administration.
Member benefits
- Shaping LEA’s agenda
- Leveraging of sponsorship with funding from other LEA members and with other research at the LRC
- Meetings to inform members of LEA research activities, including early results, and other findings from the LRC
- Research can be launched immediately and conducted in-house for timely results
- Option to perform other research activities as needed via membership fees
Membership cost
The membership cost for the LEA is:
- $30,000 per year
- $15,000 per year for LRC Partners
- A three-year commitment provides an additional $5,000 discount per year.
Funds are pooled to conduct research and operations.
