To gain success, lighting control products on the market must allow systems to achieve three main goals:
- Achieve sufficient functionality to meet the key requirements of their main market.
- Allow significant cost reduction compared with current market standard systems. Cost should take into account hardware capital expenses including wiring, design time, installation time, commissioning time, and remedial time.
- Minimize ongoing perceived overhead costs and inconvenience to the end user. In other words, systems should be simple to understand and use.
Based on reviews of existing research, technologies, patents and market data related to lighting controls, as well as interviews and surveys, the LRC identified three technologies with the potential for greater use:
