SSL Education Programs
LED Lighting Institute
Solid-state lighting is a major part of the educational outreach programs at the Lighting Research Center.
In 2001, the LRC began offering the first independent, research-based workshop for lighting designers, architects, and engineers on how to build successful LED lighting products and applications.
Held twice a year at the LRC in Troy, New York, the LED Lighting Institute is a hands-on workshop that teaches participants the basics of LED technology and builds their understanding of LED system integration issues involving the electrical, optical, and thermal characteristics of LEDs. Participants learn how to measure and evaluate component and system performance, and have the opportunity to compare technologies from a variety of manufacturers. The program culminates with the participants designing, building, and evaluating their own fixtures. LRC experts work side-by-side with participants in a small-class setting designed to help them learn more about this quickly evolving lighting technology. In addition to LEDs, the LRC has expanded the LED Lighting Institute in 2013 to add new content on OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes).
At the LED Lighting Institute, participants:
-
Learn about the latest advances in LED and OLED technology
-
Learn about strengths and weaknesses of LED and OLED products
-
Learn to design lighting installations using LEDs and OLEDs
-
Learn to select and specify lighting system components
-
Observe hands-on demonstrations of a full range of LED and OLED technologies used in a variety of applications
-
Experiment with LED and OLED lighting technology by building sample lighting fixtures
-
Learn how to match application requirements with available technologies
-
Learn about the latest LED and OLED research and testing
-
Receive an LRC Continuing Education Certificate in LED Lighting
To date, more than 700 participants from around the globe have attended the LRC’s LED Lighting Institute, which is sponsored by ASSIST and other industry partners.
In addition to the LRC's in-house program, companies interested in providing LED education to a group of employees may contact the LRC for information on how to bring a customized version of the LED Lighting Institute to their own locations. Please inquire with Dr. N. Narendran, narenn2@rpi.edu or (518) 687-7100.
