Student Life

When you enter the graduate education program at the LRC you become a colleague with some of the leading researchers and designers in the field of lighting today. Students work alongside the LRC's world-class faculty and staff. Students typically enter either of the degree programs in the fall semester and matriculate through each program as a class. Class sizes are kept small to ensure that students have individual access to faculty.

LRC students enjoy access to world-class facilities, including the 30,000 square feet of research, classroom, design, and office space at the LRC. The world's largest lighting library is located at the LRC and is open to all LRC students.

Students also have full access to the Rensselaer campus, which is located less than a half mile away from the LRC. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, is America's first technological research university. The university offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in engineering; the sciences; information technology and web sciences; architecture; management; and the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Rensselaer faculty advance research in a wide range of fields, with an emphasis on biotechnology, nanotechnology, computational science and engineering, data science, and the media arts and technology. The Institute has an established record of success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace, fulfilling its founding mission of applying science "to the common purposes of life."

Located on a scenic hillside, Rensselaer's 260-acre campus is quiet and park-like, yet full of the conveniences of a self-contained city. The campus overlooks the historic city of Troy, including the LRC, and the Hudson River. Students enjoy a supportive, active community and a commute of just a few hours to Boston, New York City, and Montreal. New York State's Capital Region is host to a rich and varied cultural tradition and some of the country's finest outdoor recreation.
